1881, Ravenna Democratic Press: "Died, in Franklin, December 13th, 1881, of malarial fever, Mrs. Emma R., wife of John Bergin, and daughter of Ashford Watters, in the 25th year of her age. She was born in Northfield, Summit county, Ohio, January 31st, 1857. With her parents she moved to Franklin in 1862, and to Randolph in 1866, where her home was until she and Mr. Bergin were married February 27, 1879. She was an affectionate child, a loving wife and mother, and a faithful friend. Her ambition was to make herself useful, and in early life she struggled successfully with adverse circumstances, until she became a fair scholar and an efficient teacher. She had a pleasant home, and for her life had many attractions, but after a sickness of a little more than two weeks she was called up higher, leaving a husband, an infant daughter, parents, one brother, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Her funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 14th, in the Disciple's Church in Randolph. An appropriate sermon was preached by Rev. Andrew Willson of Ravenna, who less than three years previous had solemnized her marriage."

1885 May 21 Ravenna Democratic Press: "Last Thursday morning while Mr. John Bergin, who resides some four or five miles northwest of this village, in Franklin Township, was engaged in tieing his cows in the stable prepatory to milking, one of the animals threw up her head, her sharp horn striking Mr. Bergin on the inside of his leg, inflicting a very serious wound, severing a vein, which bled very profusely. He has been confined to he house since by his injuries, but is getting along well."
