Alberdean Berkenpas (nee Kooiker), age 86, has made the journey from life on earth to life in heaven. A longtime Jenison resident, she went to be with Jesus on September 7, 2014, joining her parents, all-but-one of her 8 siblings and her granddaughter Rebecca.

She leaves behind her beloved husband and children: Jim Berkenpas, Carole and Jim Bos, Janice and Rob Veldman, Jim and Beth Berkenpas; 4 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; her much-adored brother, Nick Kooiker; numerous nieces and nephews and several brothers-and-sisters-in-law.

Alberdean's greatest joy in life was her family. Her fondest topic of conversation was her family. One of the things she most-loved to do was sing with her family (even while riding in the car). She also enjoyed being a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. By her example, Alberdean showed her children that living the best-possible life starts with loving God, loving others and being grateful for all God's blessings. She was very close to her own mother, Alice Kooiker, who died at the age of 96. Determined to fight back when a stroke nearly took her life, five years ago, Alberdean regained her ability to write (which she loved to do), to talk (which she really loved to do) and to walk (with the aid of a walker). During her final days - when she no longer had the strength to speak - she taught her family about courage in the face of death. She helped her children and grandchildren to understand that the greatest gifts we can give each other in life are the gifts of presence, love and kindness - none of which can be purchased in a store.

Alberdean requested a simple but meaningful service, to include her family and friends, at her Georgetown Cemetery grave site. Immediately before that committal service, to be led by her pastor, Rev. Mark Bennick (of 12th Avenue CRC in Jenison, where Jim and Alberdean have long been members), those wishing to pay their respects are welcome to visit with Alberdean's family at Cook Funeral Home's Grandville Chapel (located at 4235 Prairie Street, S.W, Grandville) on Tuesday, September 9, between 11 AM and noon. Alberdean's family thanks the care givers at LifeHouse Lakeside Vista, in Holland, for their kind and loving care these past 2½ years. Her family is particularly grateful to Hospice of Holland whose staff members helped to ease the pain and sadness of her impending death. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions, in Alberdean's name, be given to Hospice of Holland.
