Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars with Reverend Wick Hubers officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to Calvin Christian Reformed Church. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars.
Pallbearers will be Dennis, Zoerink, Dean Zoerink, Todd Zoerink, Matt Zoerink, Darwin Berkenpas, and Gene Orban.
Gertrude H. Berkenpas was born November 27, 1921 in Bemis, South Dakota to Henry and Anna (Tammenga) Berkenpas. The family moved to the LeMars area as a young child and later called Seney and LeMars home.
While she wants to be remembered as a tender and loving person, throughout her years she enjoyed caring for others. Not only was she a hard worker, but also enjoyed tomato and flower gardening, travelling to visit family, family parties, and holiday gatherings. She especially enjoyed crocheting afghans and quilting. Frequently she could be heard playing the piano or organ, playing hymns by ear. She thoroughly enjoyed listening to University of Iowa sporting events and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a charter member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars.
She was united in marriage to Mitchell Zoerink on October 4, 1942 in South Sioux City, Nebraska and made their home in Seney and LeMars with their two sons, Dennis and Dean. Mitchell passed away on March 25, 1994. The couple had celebrated 52 years of marriage together.
Survivors include her sons: Dennis (Pat) Zoerink of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Dean (Ellen) Zoerink of Macomb, Illinois; four grandchildren Michelle (John) Baker, Richmond Virginia, Todd (Nicole) Zoerink, Parker, Colorado, Sarah (Dan) Williams, Oxford, Mississippi and Matthew (Genevieve Comeau) Zoerink, Chicago, Illinois; seven great grandchildren Rachel and Katherine Baker, Cade and Nash Zoerink and Ellen Kate, Beckett and Campbell Williams and; several nieces and nephews.
Gert was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mitchell; an infant son, David; brothers, Richard Berkenpas, Sidney Berkenpas, Leonard Berkenpas, Gilbert Berkenpas, Donald Berkenpas, Harold Berkenpas and Darrel Berkenpas and sister, Esther Faber.
