In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Family of David Berkenpas.

As a youth, Dave spent much time with his father and brothers splitting firewood at the home of his second family, Jake and Cleo Ahrendsen. Still today, Dave enjoyed the hobby and was well-known for his "ski-lodge fires" that he built nightly at his home. Often the records he collected for his jukebox played in the background.

Dave graduated from LCHS in 1981 and began working at Hy-Vee. It was there that he met the love of his life. David Berkenpas and Kristina Mousel were married on July 12, 1985.

After taking a position in the sales department at Harker's, the couple moved to Wichita, KS, where they started a family with the birth of twin girls. Promotions with Harker's led to further moves to Lincoln, NE, and Fort Collins, CO, where two sons were added to the family.

In 2002, Dave returned home to Le Mars as a sales manager for AmSan.

Dave's love for others extended beyond his family, and it was evident in his many friendships that developed with work associates and neighbors. He felt genuine concern for anyone that he came across.

His greatest satisfaction in life came from the time he spent with his family and friends. Many vacations with both were spent in the mountains of Wyoming and Colorado and the Northwoods of Wisconsin and Michigan. It was there that so many memorable hikes were made and stories were told.

His favorite sporting events to watch were those that his children were involved in from running alongside on a cross country course to yelling for first downs at the football games, from cheering at the baseball fields to loading clay pigeons for the boys.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kris; children: Lauren Berkenpas of Huron, SD, Lindsay (Bobby) Ladd of Eagan, MN, Eric Berkenpas of Le Mars, and Adam Berkenpas of Le Mars; his mother, Lorraine Berkenpas of Le Mars; his siblings: Jody (Steve) Ohm of Le Mars, Linda (John) Nilles of Le Mars, and Tom (Michele) Berkenpas of Le Mars; sister in law, Patty Berkenpas of Le Mars; father in law, Wayne Mousel of Le Mars; siblings in law: Brad (Loreen) Mousel of Sioux Falls, SD, Barb Rhodes Schnoes (Ron Schnoes) of Ames, IA, Kerry (Ken) Loutsch of Kingsley, IA, and Steve (Jillayne) Mousel of Le Mars and many other relatives.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Darrel; brother, Doug; mother in law, Marlene Mousel; and brother in law, Ken Rhodes.
