Emma (nee Vercellino) Bernau was born in Bisbee, Cochise Co., Arizona to Agostine (aka Gus) Vercellino and his wife Domenica (aka Minnie) Gherna. Gus and Minnie were immigrants to the US from the area of the Italian Piedmont known as the Canavese, both having been born in the comune of Salto. The family originally made their home in Bisbee, Arizona, but later moved to Santa Barbara, California. Emma's siblings include Lenor (b. 1903, Salto), Helen and/or Mary (m. Posey)(b. 1907, Bisbee), Edith and/or Ada (b. 1912/1913, Bisbee), and Adeline (b. 1919, Bisbee). Emma's cousin, Catherine Vercellino, the daughter of Gus's brother Savino and Savino's wife Maria Rolando, was orphaned at a young age and raised by Gus and Minnnie. Catherine married Benner Essington, both deceased and buried at this cemetery.
