Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Thomas and Grace (Mayne) Beveridge, Scottish immigrants who married in Nova Scotia about 1839. Her mother died while she was an infant, and she was raised by her older sister, Sarah K. (Beveridge) Westlake, in Bellaire, Ohio. Sarah's husband, George, wrote letters home during the Civil War that mention "my little Emmy."

Emma married John E. Beck, 4 July 1872, in Belmont County, Ohio, and they had a son, Howard A. Beck, born about 1874 in Bellaire. By 1880, she had separated from John, or possibly he had died, she had married Frank Lewis Smith, and they were living at 13 Scott Street in Pittsburgh, with son Howard, age 3.

Over the years, they lived mostly in Pittsburgh, although in 1910 they lived on Big Daniels Run Road in West Bethlehem Twp, Washington County, Pa., with Howard, a widower, and his son, Arlington S. Beck. I think that Howard later changed his name to Frank Lewis Smith Jr and moved to Kentucky and West Virginia.
