U.S. Senator. He graduated from Indiana Asbury, in 1885, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1887 and commenced practice in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1911. After his term, he was chairman of the National Progressive Convention, in 1912. After his political career, he dedicated his time to writing historical literature and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography with his four-volume book set “The Life of John Marshall”, published in 1916.
