"Wilma Biggs Sotak On Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, Wilma Biggs Sotak passed away at her home on Westwood Drive with her family and friends by her side. She was in her 94th year. Born Wilma Edith Biggs at Paint Creek near Harper on Nov. 21, 1912, she was the fifth daughter of 11 children born to the late Lonzo Carlos and Minnie Godby Biggs. Known affectionately as ôWigö all her life, Wilma graduated from Trap Hill High School in 1932. She went to work in the company store at Eccles, where she was to meet her husband-to-be, Steve Sotak. They were married in 1939, and lived together in Fayette and Raleigh counties for 50 years until SteveÆs death in 1989. A homemaker, her home was open to all. Known for her cooking, she insisted no one ever leave her home hungry. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Mamie McCutcheon, Thelma Beckelhimer, Faye Daniels, Opal Stanley, Gladys Wilson and Freda Hugall; and three brothers, Paul, Carlos ôBusterö and Cecil Biggs. Survivors include her closest sister, Mildred ôMidgeö Mahaffey of Beckley. She was the beloved mother of Dave Sotak and his wife, Nancy, of Beckley and Phillip Sotak and his wife, Anne, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; the dear grandmother of Ashley Williams and her husband, David, of Beckley, Adam Sotak and his wife, Tara Purohit, of Carrboro, N.C., Jeremy Sotak and his wife, Sarah, of Beckley and Caleb Sotak of Huntington; great-grandchildren, Brandon Pierce, Cole and Emily Williams and Alisa Boyce-James; and her longtime friend, Georgia Slygh. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. Special thanks go to the seven faithful and wonderful caregivers who stayed with our mother these past six months and to Hospice of Southern West Virginia and their caring staff. Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Harry Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 1:30 p.m. until time of services Sunday. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Following the service, there will be a repast gathering at the home of Mildred Mahaffey at 106 Lilly St., Beckley. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley."
