Hays -- Verna Augustine, 75, Hays, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Augustine was born Verna Billinger on March 1, 1925, at Victoria and was a resident of Hays since 1972.

She was head cook at the Elks Lodge, Russell, for many years and a house mother at Sigma Chi fraternity for many years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both of Hays.

Her husband, Matthew, died in 1980.

Survivors include six sons, Lonnie of Cedar Point, Kerry of Bemidji, Minn., Gene of Fort Lupton, Colo., Jimmy of Ocala, Fla., Daryl of Hays and LaVern of Salina; a daughter, Mary Kay Reynolds of Loveland, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the Rev. Bill Surmeier officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. A Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary service will be at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel, 20th and Pine, Hays 67601.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Hays Medical Center. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
