Harold served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. Halligan ( DD-584 ), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine prior to the war.

On March 26, 1945 the U.S.S. Halligan ( DD-584 ) was patrolling of the shore of Okinawa when at about 18:35 a tremendous explosion rocked the ship, sending smoke and debris 200 feet (61 m) in the air.

The Halligan had hit a moored mine head on, exploding the forward magazines and blowing off the forward section of the ship including the bridge, back to the forward stack.

" 169 " of the Halligan's crew were lost .....

Harold was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
