Old cemetery records do not show her first name. She is listed as "Mrs. Bissell" and entry states that she and her husband Gov. William H. Bissell were removed to Oak Ridge Cemetery from Hutchinson Cemetery on May 29, 1871. While her name was not mentioned, other sources indicate Elizabeth Bissell was the wife who died in Belleville and was buried with him. From his biography in the 1891 Biographical Album of Sangamon County, Illinois:

"He was twice married, the first time to Miss (Emily) James, of Monroe County, by whom he had two children, both daughters. She died soon after the year 1840, and Mr. B. married for his second wife a daughter of Elias K. Kane, previously a United States Senator from this State. She survived him but a short time, and died without issue."

Other biographies and books have said that the Governor's first wife was Emily Susan Jones and that she died in 1844. They had two daughters. They indicate that his second wife was Elizabeth Kintzing Kane.
