AU SABLE FORKS - Mrs. Nellie Bailey Smith passed away suddenly Saturday, December 13, 1969 at the Champlain Valley Unit of the Medical Center in Plattsburgh where she was receiving treatment.

Born January 28, 1883 in Jay, the daughter of Rufus Bissell and Lena (Carpenter) Bissell.

She married Samuel E. Bailey, a carpenter for the J. & J. Rogers Co., in 1899. They had five children, one dying in infancy. Her husband died in 1928.

In 1935 she married William H. Smith, a retired policeman from New York City. He died in 1940.

For many years she worked in hotels in this area, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Bermuda and various other places. After her retirement she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Walter Sorrell of town.

A young 86, she kept active by reading, knitting, attending bingo and was interested in local affairs, neighbors and friends.

Survivors include three sons and one daughter, Eugene R. Bailey of Canaan, N.Y.; Harold V. Bailey of Keeseville; Ralph Bailey and Mrs. Thelma H. Sorrell of Au Sable Forks; one brother, Jay Bissell of Whallonsburg; two nieces, Misses Bessie and Lillis Bailey and one cousin Mrs. Sidney Estes, all of town; eight grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service was held by Reverend Calvin J. Seiferth of Jay Tuesday at two o'clock at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Au Sable Forks.

Pall bearers were Leonard Snow, James George, Roderick Carey, Joseph Gilbert of town; Vernon McDonald of Jay; and Samuel Bailey of Buffalo.

Relatives and friends from out of town attending were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Crosby and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bailey of Canaan; Mr. and Mrs. Max Lehmann of Jay; Mrs. Lucy Margolise of Montreal; Mr. Jay Bissell of Whallonsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bailey and Mr. and Mrs. James Martin of Keeseville.
