Blackie was born at the Mount Meru Game Sanctuary in Tanzania, Africa and brought to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 1955 when he was about a year old, he sired three male hippopotamuses during his life. A special heated pool was built for Blackie in 2008 helping him to be comfortable until the end. Blackie lived out his last several years contentedly eating copious amounts of produce and floating lazily in a pool he didn't have to share. He was the oldest Nile hippopotamus in North America at the time of his death.
