Mary passed very peacefully on November 21, 2013 at her home after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 83.
Mary was born in Spearville, Kansas, and was the fourth of seven children born to William and Rose Blake. When Mary was about five years old, the family left Kansas and moved to Walker Mine in Plumas County. In 1940, the family moved to Roseville, where Mary attended Roseville High School with good friends Betty (Doyle) Radford, Jean (Washburn) Conley and Mary Jimenez, graduating in 1948.
About 1951, she met Lee Berry, and they married in 1953 at St. Rose of Lima Church. After the marriage, Mary and Lee moved to San Diego where Lee was stationed during the Korean War. Following Lee's discharge in 1954, they moved to Sacramento, where Mary worked for the State of California for many years at the Department of Mental Hygiene with her very good friend Vera Brown.
In 1956, their son, John, was born, and in 1960 they moved back to Roseville, where they lived for over 40 years, surrounded by family and good friends. Mary enjoyed tending to her garden and home and traveling around the world. Mary and Lee traveled to England to visit their son, and she had a great time visiting Paris at Christmastime. Mary and Lee took many trips with friends and family, traveling to Cabo San Lucas with friends Betty and Paul Radford and to Hawaii with her sister Helen and husband David Watts.
Mary was preceded in death by her sister Wilma, parents William and Rose Blake, father- and mother-in-law Dewitt and Marie Berry, brother-in-laws David Watts, Glenn Berry, and John Brownlee, niece Christina Emerson and very good friends Jean and George Conley, Betty Brocchini, Marge and Dick Fledderman, Norman Hamrah, and Vera Brown.
She is survived by her son, John, and sisters and brothers Norma and Wes Jones, Evelyn Emerson, Helen Watts, Paul and Karen Blake, Edmund and Margie Blake, sister-in-law Vivien Brownlee, brother-in-law Roger and Janet Berry, nephews and nieces Karen and John Cartoscelli, Sharen and Calvin Cornils, Bill and Marnice Emerson, Kathy and Russell Shelton, Lynn and Greg Hedrick, Cheryl Flynn, Michael Jones, Lois and Alan Lim, Caroline Hueske, Greg and Joan Blake, Stephen Blake, Karl Berry, Marc Berry, and many, many more friends, nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Lee, expressed it thus: "Life's morn will soon be waning, and its evening bells shall toll, but my heart will know no sadness, if you love me when I'm old...See you later, Dear...".
Services for Mary were held at Cochrane & Wagemann's Chapel of the Roses in Roseville on December 2, 2013, at 10:00am, followed by burial at Roseville Community Cemetery, next to the love of her life.
