Born Oct. 31, 1931, in Brown's Store, Va., Elsie attended Virginia State College, graduating in 1953 with a bachelor of science degree. While at Virginia State, she became a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Elsie was employed with the Essex County Division of Social Services for 26 years and retired in December 1993. Elsie was also a member of the NAACP and AARP and St. Peter Claver Church of Montclair.
Elsie was the wife of Carl A. Blyden; mother of Carla and Carl (Aaron), stepdaughter, Cassiar Smith and stepson, Maney (Pete) Crawley; grandmother of Byron, Arnel, Candice, Erika, Dominique and Jarvis; sister of Julia Pelham, Bernice Allen (Willie), Gertrude Keeves, and Fred Lawrence; dear niece of Myrtle, Olethia Bromley, and Artea Palmer. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
