Heinrich Böll was born in Süderhastedt, Dithmarschen. After his mother died, his father married Catharina Helüman in 1879. He emigrated to America departing Hamburg aboard HAPAG's SS Bohemia on May 25, 1882, with his father, step-mother, half-sister Anna, and brothers, John and Peter. After a brief residence in Pottawatomie County, Iowa, he settled in Howard County, Nebraska. He married Dora Lemburg on March 12, 1902. They lived on a farm outside Farwell, Nebraska, until at least 1915. They then moved to St. Paul, Nebraska, to allow the children to attend high school. They bought a large two-storey house and took in about a dozen boarders. They sold the house and moved back to the farm in 1921. His brother, Peter, is also buried in this cemetery.
