Bessie was born on Feb. 20, 1921, in Boyero, Colo., the daughter of Earnest and Verbena (White) Elliott.

Bessie’s memory is cherished by her sons, Larry (Marilyn) Bombeck of Grand Island, Donald (Janet) Bombeck of Grand Island and Ivan Bombeck of Kearney; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth H. Bombeck; brothers, Elvin and Robert; sisters, Ina Whittlesey, Virginia Connelly, Dorothy Rice, and infant sister, Lucy.

Bessie grew up in rural Colorado and received her education in Lincoln County schools.

On April 9, 1940, she was united in marriage to Kenneth H. Bombeck in her parents’ home near Boyero, Colo. They spent the early years of their marriage in the area. In 1944 the couple moved to a farm near Kearney. They continued to live in the Kearney, Amherst and Shelton area until the time of her husband’s death on Sept. 29, 1969. She then moved to Grand Island to be closer to the Nebraska Veterans Home, where she was employed. She was later employed as a food service worker at the Lutheran Hospital until retiring in 1983. Not one to be idle, Bessie joined the staff at the YMCA as a part-time babysitter.

She loved to share her home with young people studying to be teachers, vicars and wives of veterans who needed a place to stay while visiting loved ones in the hospital.

On Feb. 27, 1949, Bessie, her husband, Kenneth, and three sons were baptized together at Amherst Immanuel Lutheran Church. Bessie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a past president of Ladies Aid, and a member of the Ruth Society, LWML and the LLL League.

Bessie loved to cook, a passion she shared in her job at the Lutheran Hospital. She took pride in her yard, spending her spare time tending to the lawn and flowers. Bessie was also an avid bowler. Bessie loved to play cards; she taught many of the visitors she had and enjoyed family card nights.
