Norstar Apts., died today in St. Joseph's
Hospital after a long illness.
He was a resident of Syracuse over 64
years and was a professional boxer from
1915 to 1922. He fought under the name of
Jimmy "Kid" Herman and was a favorite
of Central New York. Mr. Bongo gained
national recognition and was in contention
for the featherweight championship of the
world, but retired due to an injury to his
sight. Bongo was employed by the Atlantic
and Pacific Tea Company for 37 years.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Josephine Tucci; a son, Joseph Bongo,
Principal of Shea Junior High;two daughters, Mrs. Christine Anthony of Camillus
and Mrs. Theresa Scuderi of Liverpool; a
brother, Lenard of Milan, Italy, and a sister,
Antoinette of Troy, Italy; nine grandchildren,
and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 8:15 a.m. at
Pirro and Sons Funeral Home, and at 9
a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic
Church.
Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
