Composer. She is best known for her role as a composition teacher for such greats as Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, Virgil Thomson, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones. Because of this role, she is regarded to have been one of the most important influences on the modern landscape of American music. , Igor Stravinsky and Boulanger "taught" music together at the Ecole Normale in Paris in the 1923-24 school year, the only time he actually taught music composition. She was a composer until the death of her younger sister, Lili Boulanger. She was the first woman to conduct many of the world's major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She also played the organ and piano.
