Information from another findagrave member:
Hi,
Robert Carter seems to have confused the couple with a younger William Allen & Mary R Brown who married 30 Jan 1867 in Surry Co, a date which would make many of this couple's children illegitimate.
This couple did not marry in Surry, rather this is William R. Allen and Mary E BOWEN, who married 3 June 1855 in STOKES County. (Bond dated 31 May 1855), with J.L. Mickey as bondsman, who would later marry Mary Bowen's younger sister, Letitia Bowen.
Mary Bowen Allen was a daughter of Edwin Bowen and Elizabeth BARR of Stokes, who married 15 Jan 1834 in Stokes County. To the best of my knowledge, their graves have not been found.
Mary, age 13, is enumerated in the 1850 Stokes Co (Richmond District) household of her parents, Edwin & Elizabeth Bowen. By 1860, she is 22, and enumerated in the Pilot District of Surry with her husband, William Allen, and their first 3 children.
The extant death certs of their children all list Mary's maiden name as Bowen. Unfortunately, I've not had luck locating Mary's or William's death certs, but hope this is sufficient evidence for you to correct Mary's maiden name to "Bowen."
Thanks so much.
