Meets Death in Auto Mishap

Word received here this morning tells of death of Mrs. Ruth E. Black, a local woman in an accident which occurred between Gallup, New Mexico, and Fort Defiance, Arizona - is mother of George Edwin black of this city.

Particulars Are Unknown
A telegram was received here this morning by George Edwin Black, linotype operator in a local printing establishment, from his brother, Rev. Alexander Black, of Ft. Defiance, Ariz., notifying him that their mother, Mrs. Ruth A. Black, was killed in an automobile accident, which occurred between Gallup, N. Mex., and Ft. Defiance, Ariz., late Friday afternoon.

Mrs. Black was a resident of this city and was on her way from Greencastle to the home of her son at Ft. Defiance when the accident occurred. No particulars of the accident are known. Mrs. Black left here Tuesday noon for her son’s home in Ft. Defiance, going by way of Chicago, a 1500-mile trip, and was scheduled to reach Gallup Friday morning. From Gallup she was to take an automobile for the completion of her trip to Ft. Defiance, a distance of thirty miles. It was while on this last section of the trip that her death occurred. She would have gone there sooner had not the impassable condition of the road between Gallup and Ft. Defiance prevented. Her household goods had been shipped earlier in the spring and had been arranged in the house at Ft. Defiance, awaiting her arrival.

Mrs. Black was horn in White county, this state, 63 years ago, and was the daughter of the late Capt. George Bowman, of Monticello, who commanded a company of infantry in the Civil war. She was a sister of Mrs. Anna Bowman Hoffman, wife Professor Horace Hoffman of this Indiana State University; of Mrs.; Georgia Bowman Giles, wife of School Superintendent Giles of Richmond, and of Mrs. Phoebe Morrison of Chiepewa, Ontario. Her step-mother, Mrs. Mary I. Bowman, resides with M. Morrison. Mrs. Black was the widow , of Rev. Edwin Black, whose death 1 occurred in Florida in 1887. They had only the two sons. The interment will occur at Ft. Defiance.
