"Samuel S. Bowne, a well-known resident of Cooperstown, died at his home on Pioneer street Monday morning, after a long illness of kidney and heart trouble. The end came very suddenly and unexpected. The funeral will be held from the late home Thursday at 3 o'clock, Rev. Ralph Birdsall officiating, with burial in Lakewood cemetery. Mr. Bowne was 67 years of age. He was born in the town of Morris the son of Charles A. Bowne. He was the namesake of his distinguished grandfather, the Hon. Samuel S. Bowne, who represented this district in Congress in 1840. Mr. Bowne went to Wisconsin in 1873, and resided there and in Montana for several years. Returning to Cooperstown he entered the employ of the late Thomas Johnston in the clothing business and afterward conducted a gentlemen's furnishing store in the present location of the National Express Co., until he was appointed postmaster by the second administration of President Cleveland. For most of the time since his term as postmaster, Mr. Bowne has been connected with the dry goods store of Bundy & Cruttenden. On July 5th, 1882, he was united in marriage to Amelia Edwards, who survives him. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. E. M. Burpee of Oneonta and Mrs. Lee B. Cruttenden, and two brothers, James F. Bowne of Penn Yan and Charles G. Bowne of Morris. Mrs. Walter H. Bunn, who died in January, 1914, was a sister of the deceased." [The Freeman's Journal (Cooperstown, NY), May 26, 1915, Page 1]
