"Charles A. Bowne, Esq., an attorney and counselor-at-law at Morris for more than half a century, died last Friday morning at his home in that village, aged 84 years. He was a son of Samuel S. Bowne, former judge of Otsego county, and, in 1840, its representative in Congress. The son inherited the judicial mind of the father and to a marked degree his eloquence. Charles A. Bowne was born in the town of Butternuts, now Morris, October 7, 1821. He was reared in the profession of a lawyer in his father's office at Laurens and Cooperstown, and he continued the practice of law until failing health caused him to retire. During a few years that his father was a resident at Rochester he served the city as its attorney. While Mr. Bowne was an effectual party worker, he did not seek office and he gave his attention closely to his profession. He had, however, served as justice of peace at Morris, and was once elected justice of sessions. Mr. Bowne was married September 17, 1842, to Miss Mary A. Mott, who died in 1900. They had seven children, one of whom, John, died at the age of eight years. The others survive, and are: Mrs. Walter H. Bunn, of New York; Mrs. F. M. Burpee, of Oneonta; Samuel S., Mrs. Lee B. Cruttenden, both of Cooperstown; Charles G., living at Morris, and James F., of Penn Yan. Mr. Bowne has twenty grand children and twenty great-grandchildren living. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. Interment in Hillington Cemetery at Morris." [The Otsego Farmer (Cooperstown, NY), Fri., Oct. 6, 1905, p. 4]
