"The death of James G. Bowne, a former well known resident of Cooperstown and a native of Morris, occurred at a hospital at Penn Yan on Wednesday, February 5th. Mr. Bowne underwent a serious operation at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown a year ago, which proved successful and he made a good recovery. Three weeks ago he entered the hospital at Penn Yan for treatment for heart trouble but he did not rally, and gradually failed until the end. Mr. Bowne was one of seven children of Charles A. and Mary (Mott) Bowne and was born at Morris September 24, 1851. His early life was spent in Wisconsin and Montana. Later he returned east and acted as deputy county clerk under the late Lee B. Cruttenden of Cooperstown. After the expiration of Mr. Cruttenden's term as county clerk he was employed in the feed and coal business of John R. Kirby, now conducted by Bruce L. Hall, Inc., in this village. Twenty years ago he went to Penn Yan and became manager of a hotel in that city in which position he had continued until his last sickness. He had many friends in Cooperstown and Otsego county who will feel in his death a distinct sense of personal loss. The only survivor of the immediate family is Charles G. Bowne, a brother, who resides at Morris. The late Mrs. Lee B. Cruttenden of this village was a sister. The funeral was held at Zion Episcopal church at Morris on Saturday, the rector, the Rev. E. E. Hutchinson, officiating, and burial was made in Hillington cemetery at that place." [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Fri., Feb. 14, 1930, Page Eight]
