Folk figure. Bowring was known as the "First Lady of the Pacific" for her work organizing canteen services for American troops in New Caledonia during World War II. Before the war, she worked as a nurse, gold miner, café owner, and poultry farmer. During the war it was said that next to Admiral Halsey, "Mum," as the troops called her, was the best known personality of the South Pacific. She was awarded a certificate of appreciation by General Gruenther, head of the American Red Cross and former commander of NATO forces in Europe. Bowring appeared as a guest on a 1959 episode of the game show "What's My Line?"
