Merton K. Bratton Jr., age 78, passed away on February 2, 2008 in Albuquerque, NM.
Merton was born to Merton K. Bratton Sr. and Grace E. Bratton in Fayette, IA on April 30, 1929.
Merton was loved and cherished by his family and friends. Merton was a long time educator, retired from Albuquerque Public Schools. Merton earned his Masters Degree at the University of Northern Iowa in 1960. Merton was a recipient of the National Science Foundation Grant for Science and Math Teachers through UNI, Ohio State University and Winona (MN) State College. Merton was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honorary. Merton was an avid hunter and sportsman. Merton loved to fish and go after the big game, such as deer and antelope. Merton was an avid motorcyclist. Merton was a member of the New Mexico Retreads and Land of Enchantment BMW Riders, and made many cross-country trips with his wife, Elinor, on their motorcycles. Merton and Elinor also took numerous summer trips with their children during his teaching career, and he continued to travel the world with Elinor after his retirement.
Merton is survived by his wife, Elinor of 59 years and two children, one son, Kent Bratton and his wife, Julie of Manhattan, KS and one daughter, Jan Brunton and her husband Dean of Albuquerque, NM, four grandchildren, Jennifer Forsyth of Savanna, GA, and Jessica Bradbury of Fort Myers, FL, Don Brunton and his wife, Carina of Albuquerque, NM and Tom Brunton and his wife, Rachel of Albuquerque, NM. Merton is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Shawna and Heather Forsyth, Chase and Ashley Bradbury. Merton is survived by his brother, Charles Bratton of Albuquerque, NM and his sister, Sharon Beringer of Kansas City, MO.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 9500 Constitution Blvd. NE with Pastor Roy Elmore officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to your favorite charity or St. Paul's United Methodist Church General Fund.
