SNOW HILL | Mrs. Margaret Braxton Barfield died late Friday evening, September 30, 2016. A native of Greene County, she was born the daughter of Meanon Vance and Effie Frances Robinson Braxton. Margaret was a graduate of the Maury High School where she was a star basketball player. Margaret took great pride in her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and businesswoman, having managed the former Will's Outlet in Snow Hill until the flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd destroyed it. An outgoing manner and love of people were trademarks that propelled her to remain active in her community and church until just a few months prior to her death. Margaret was an avid Bridge player, active in charitable and civic organizations, a dedicated voter and follower of politics, and even had roles in the great theatrical plays produced by the high school music department in years past. A member of the First Baptist Church, she was a fixture in its choir and ladies auxiliary, as well as having served as a Sunday school teacher in the children's classes in years past. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Barfield; and siblings, Carrie Lee Bowen, Mable Grimsley, Frank Braxton and Melvin Braxton. Her surviving family includes her daughter, Dr. Conniesue Barfield Oldham and husband W.C., of Cary; son, Bobby Barfield of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Will Oldham and wife Jennifer of Cary, Ray Barfield and Kathryn Barfield, both of Elmira, N.Y.; and a great-granddaughter, Ava Claire Oldham. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, at the First Baptist Church of Snow Hill with Pastor David Sawyer officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service and other times at the Barfield residence. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 484, Snow Hill, NC 28580. The family would like to thank Lori Grimes and the dedicated staff of Greendale Forest Nursing Facility for their dedicated care to Mrs. Barfield in the last months. Arrangements are by Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service.
