A. Glen Brewer, 85, of Lititz, PA, passed away on August 2, 2015 at the United Zion Retirement Community after a lengthy illness. Born Sept. 22, 1929 in Greene County, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Christopher Ury (Boss) and Abbie Brady Brewer. He was married 59 years to the late Leona Krafft Brewer, who died in 2013.
Glen grew up in the deep south region of southeast Mississippi and, being the eldest of 9 siblings, developed his dry wit and sharp tongue as well as his leadership qualities he carried his entire life. Whether it was walking on the hard, dusty dirt roads of rural Mississippi to school or to various jobs of his youth and early days, including farming, pumping gas and working on the pipeline at the shipyards in Mobile, AL, Glen, who stood 6’8” tall , or as he would say, 5’20”, also found time to become an all-state basketball player in high school, and while sometimes playing on sand courts, he along with his teammates, played in the Mississippi state playoffs, reaching the championship game.
After high school, Glen served in the US Army during the Korean War as a tank mechanic. After the service, Glen then migrated up to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds to work. He spent time in the Elizabethtown, PA area with his Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Dean, where he met his future wife, Leona. After marriage, they settled in Lititz, PA, raising 2 children: daughter Lynn S. married to Tom Bowlus of Pemberville, OH and son Brian G. married to Tana Brewer of Lancaster. Glen started work at the Modern Tire and Frame Service and while becoming very adept at frame straightening and wheel alignment, he also developed his known nickname, Slim. After working there 25 years, he started his own business in 1981 called Slim Brewer’s Alignment Service where he continued to work many years with his son, until retiring in 2005. Glen and Lee were 50-year members of the Lititz Moravian Church where he served as an usher and helped with various jobs, many with the Christmas Vigil.
Glen was not all about work, however, as he was known to enjoy a beer or two on occasion. He also much enjoyed sports, whether watching his grandkids perform in various sports or simply watching a basketball or football game on TV. Glen also showed his athletic prowess while square dancing with Lee for many years. He also immensely enjoyed his all-night fishing excursions with his late brothers, Gavin, Ben, and Pete Brewer in the backwood creeks in Mississippi. Glen remained true to his upbringing and definitely brought a sense of southern charm to the PA Dutch Country while enjoying catfish, cornbread, and black-eyed peas of the South as well as being spoiled by Leona’s Dutch cooking of beef pot pie, potato salad, and backyard food barbecues.
Although struggling physically his last few years, when he moved to United Zion, Glen maintained his sense of humor and dignity while greeting guests as well as workers through the front door. He had compassionate and loving care from a bevy of workers at Zion, especially the sweethearts in Personal Care who went over and beyond the call of duty. All are greatly appreciated.
Besides his children, Glen is survived by four grandchildren: Tyler Bowlus married to Blythe of St. Paul, MN, Cullen, Jordan, and Seth Brewer, all of Lancaster; a sister, Sue Perkins, married to George of Leakesville, MS; and a brother-in-law, Arnold Krafft married to June of Denver, PA. Also numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, who frequently kept in touch and visited often. In addition to his late parents and brothers, Glen was preceded in death by four sisters, Velma Massey, Johnny McDonald, Vina Mae Neel, and Alfreda Brewer.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at the Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz, PA 17543 at 11AM with Pastor Mark Breland officiating. There will be a time for fellowship following the service in the Eshbach Parlor. Interment will then follow in the Moravian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Glen’s memory be made the Lititz Moravian Church at the above address. To send an online condolence, please visit |SnyderFuneralHome.com
