Always called by both names, Mary Alice is the daughter of Capt. Michael & Alice (née Britt) McGowan of Ringsend, Co. Dublin.

In 1911 she married Arthur J. Brown in Dublin City. They had 5 children. Four of Mary Alice's children died in infancy. Her daughter Alice, born in 1914, was the only child to live to adulthood. Only the names of 3 of her 5 children are known - Alice ~ b. 1914, Clare ~ b. 1916 and Michael, (birthdate unknown).

In the fall of 1920, Mary Alice died after having her fifth baby. The infant, who was very sick, was given to her sister Elizabeth Mansfield to care for, but the baby survived only a few months.

Weeks after her passing, Arthur emigrated to America with their only surviving child Alice, settling first in Brooklyn, then Queens, New York.

Mary Alice & Arthur's daughter Alice Brown married in New York some time after 1940 and had 1 child. No other information is known about her.

✞ Mary Alice Brown is buried at Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. She's in a grave with 6 other people, not related, the first was buried in 1847 and the last person in 1963. There is no tombstone.
Elsewhere in the cemetery is her daughter Clare. It's believed her son Michael and her 2 other babies may also be buried at Glasnevin.
