Jack Brown was born in Back Clare Street, Limerick. He was the third of 11 children of William Browne and Maryanne Laird, who moved to Basin Street in Naas, County Kildare , shortly after his birth. The family suffered extreme poverty at times. Jack became a groom and worked around horses all his life. He and his one-eyed horse “Gunner” worked for the Jameson Brewery, delivering whiskey to the pubs in Dublin city.

His youngest brother, Anthony Patrick Browne died in 1948 and is buried in Saint Corban’s Cemetery, Naas, along with his wife Annie Kelly Browne, who died in 1964.
