77 Squadron's Handley Page Halifax (#DT625), with an aircrew of six, took flight from RAF Elvington on a training exercise which included practicing flying on three engines. While in the air the Halifax broke apart, the resulting wreckage debris falling around a mile south east of the village of Wheldrake. All six airmen perished as a result of this tragic incident.

The casualties were-

RAFVR Flight Sergeant Allan LORD,

RAFVR Flight Sergeant Fred Vincent PASSANT,

RAFVR Pilot Officer Norman MATTHEWS,

RAFVR Flight Sergeant Leonard George SPIRES,

RAFVR Sergeant Henry SPINNER and

RAFVR Sergeant Francis George BROWN.
