Rev. Father Jeremiah Burke attended St. Patrick's Seminary in County Carlow, and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1907. He came to California from his native Ireland in 1908, and served at St. Brigid's Catholic Church in Hanford, CA, before coming to Los Angeles. He was named pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wilmington, where he served from 1911 to 1914. He then served at St. John the Evangelist parish in Hyde Park before going to Highland Park. He opened the school at St. Ignatius of Loyola parish in 1921. He resigned as pastor when his health started to fail, and then served at Nativity Catholic Church in Torrance, CA, where he died at age 50.
