Mary Margaret Reardon Burke died peacefully on June 6, 2009. She will be remembered always as a loving wife, a devoted mother, a cheerful sister and aunt and a friend to all who knew her.

Mary was born June 12, 1923, in Sioux Falls. Her parents were B. Scott and Abigail (Duggan) Reardon. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Sioux Falls in 1940, and received a BS from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., in 1944. She arrived in Chicago on V-E Day in 1945, and was the home service director at Marshall Fields. She returned to Sioux Falls and held a position at the Sioux Falls Gas Company, hosted a home economics show on KSOO Radio and wrote a home living column for the Argus Leader.
She married Charles H. Burke II of Pierre on July 24, 1948.

While living in Pierre she devoted much of her energy to volunteer organizations, especially the Girl Scouts of America as a life member, Catholic Daughters of America and St. Joseph Home and School Association. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church since 1948 and served on the altar society. She also enjoyed her opportunities to serve on the boards of South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota Centennial Committee.

Mary's great joy was in being a wife to her husband, Charles, and a mother to five children. She delighted in many traveling adventures with Charles and her family, and enjoyed 34 years of boating on the Missouri River. She was known especially for her warm smile and generous hospitality, and was ready to pour coffee or ice tea for anyone coming in her front door on Mary Lane.

Many under the age of 60 will remember Mrs. Burke as their mentor — as the mother who let all kids come, stay and eat brownies, and as the friend who would guide them while listening to their hopes and dreams.

Mary is survived by her sister, Katherine Reardon McHugh, of Boston, Mass., her husband of 60 years, Charles H. Burke II, her oldest son Charles H. Burke III (Kathy Wiedenfeld), of Pierre, Mary Jo Burke (Bob Hollenbeck), of Bonita Springs, Fla., Abbie O'Connor (Kevin O'Connor), of Silver Springs, Md., Carrie Burke (Tim Dykstal), of St. Paul, Minn. and Sean Burke (Shannon Fredrick), of Los Angeles. She has seven grandchildren: Bob and Becky Burke, Alyssa and Duggan Burke, Sean O'Connor and Henry Burke and Charles Burke Dykstal. She also has two great-grandchildren: Alexandra and Aidan Burke. Mary had 13 Reardon and McHugh nieces and nephews and a Burke niece that always were a great joy to her. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Tom Reardon, Scott Reardon, Fr. John I. Reardon, O.P., and her sister, Anne Reardon, of Dubuque, Iowa.

The family expresses great gratitude for the very special loving care provided to their mother by the staff at Edgewood Vista Memory Care Home in Sioux Falls.

Visitors will be received by the Burke family beginning at 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, at Feigum Funeral Home, 808 W. Pleasant Drive, Pierre. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass of Celebration will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11, in Pierre at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Internment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

The family kindly asks that memorial donations be directed to the Oahe Foundation/Pierre Area for Girl Scouts of America and to the Oahe Foundation/St. Joseph Catholic School in Pierre.
