PIERRE - Mary K. Burke, 72, of Pierre, died August 30, 2005, at her home in Pierre. Visitation will be Thursday, September 1, 2005, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. CDT, Trinity Episcopal Church, 408 N. Jefferson, Pierre. Funeral service will be Friday, September 2, 2005, 11:00 a.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Pierre. Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Knutson was born August 13, 1933, to Carl and Alta (Bragg) Knutson in Bellaire, Michigan. In 1947, the family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota. In 1962, Mary K. moved to Pierre to work as Chief Operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She and J. Shanard Burke were married in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on September 27, 1962. Their daughter Carla Jean Burke Tibbetts was born in 1966. Mary K. was called Home on August 30, 2005.

Mary K.'s business career included several positions at Northwestern Bell; she managed the St. Charles Hotel Restaurant, founded the first Welcome Wagon in Pierre, and became a Broker at Burke Real Estate. She joined Burke Real Estate, which was founded in 1977 by her husband J. Shanard Burke. Mary K. served as president of the Central South Dakota Realtors and was elected a Director of the South Dakota Realtors Association. She was named "Central South Dakota Realtor of the Year" in 2004.

Mary K. greatly valued her community. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church. She was a vestry member, served on the altar guild, and was a faithful member of Episcopal Church Women. Mary K. worked very actively with the Easter Seals. For eight years she chaired Celebrate America. Mary K. also was a member of the board of directors of Bank West, a member of Zonta, of the Kiwanis club and is past president of the Pierre Historical Preservation Commission. Mary K. was honored by the Pierre Area Charitable Organization as the "Fundraiser of the Year" in 1999.

Mary K was also a very gracious hostess. Her home was always open for anyone who wanted to stop by for a visit, a smile, a hug and or a bite to eat along with a cup of Shanard's great coffee. Mary K. was a wonderful cook hosting many celebrations for friends and family. She celebrated the Christmas season with great joy. And among the many memorable events Mary K. hosted are a number of beautiful weddings held in her lovely home and around her pool.

Her hobbies included a joy for travel and entertaining. She loved her grandchildren Danielle, Alexander, and Katherine Tibbetts.

Mary K. is survived by her husband John Shanard Burke of Pierre, daughter Carla Tibbetts and her husband Ted of Sioux Falls, three grandchildren, her brothers Bill Knutson of Seattle, WA, and Donald Knutson of Wichita, KS; and her two sisters Nona Syme of Bellaire, MI, and Joyce Mordhorst of Boulder, CO, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl Knutson, Jr.
