Ferne L. Burke, daughter of Ray and Eva (Burnham) Burke, was born August 4, 1917 on a farm near Spencer, SD. She grew up and attended school in Spencer. She married Jerome Brandt on January 17, 1958 in Spencer. She lived her entire life in the Spencer area. Her husband died in 1960. She was the bookkeeper for the Spencer Quarry for 36 years.
Ferne was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of Spencer, the Spencer Senior Citizens, and VFW Auxiliary of Spencer of which she was treasurer, and the Spencer Cemetery Association. She loved to read and enjoyed playing cards. Ferne also enjoyed traveling and had spent two months in Arizona with her son the past 16 winters. She died on Wednesday, November 18, 1998 at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell, SD. She had reached the age of 81 years, 3 months, and 14 days.
She is survived by one son, Patrick and wife Cleo of Phoenix, Arizona; one grandson, Christopher; a sister-in-law, Irma Burke of Topeka, Kansas; four nieces; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Virgil Burke, and a sister, Thea "Jon" Williamson.
