Hazel Nora Berends was born on July 24, 1921, in Morristown, SD, the daughter of John and Ella (Evans Barnes) Burns. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew up in Morristown and the Granite Falls area. She graduated from high school in Granite Falls in 1941 and on March 3, 1942, was united in marriage to John Berends in Maynard, MN. Hazel worked for many years at the Granite Falls Manor and later at Carl's Bakery in downtown Granite Falls. She enjoyed visiting with her family and friends, making quilts, knitting and gardening. She loved the outdoors and taking long walks. She was a faithful and active member of Granite Falls Lutheran Church. Hazel also enjoyed dancing, housekeeping and cooking. Her favorite "Ring" hot dish is being served at the funeral luncheon today. Due to her failing health, Hazel had been a resident of the Granite Falls manor for these past few years. She died peacefully on Monday evening, December 31, 2007, at the Granite Falls Municipal Hospital. She was 86 years of age. Surviving family include her three sons, Alan (& Linda) Berends, Donald (& Jeanne) Berends and Art Berends; two brothers, Earl (& Shirley) Burns of Mobridge, SD and George Burns of Morristown, SD; one sister, Edna (& Ray) Fagen of Granite Falls, MN; five grandchildren, John Berends, Christopher Berends, Jennifer Shinn, Jason Berends & Jana Berends; 8 great grandchildren, Anthony, Jordan, Andrea, Preston, Madison, Lincoln, Samuel and Ella. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband (in 1969); one son, Kenneth; one daughter, Barbara; an infant brother; one sister, Myrtle and husband Sig Eggebraaten and a sister-in-law, Lillian Burns.
