Booby Trap Takes Life of Soldier

Spec. 5 Alan Burtness, 23, a 1962 North Central High School graduate, was killed by a fragmentation booby trap in Vietnam last Thursday.

Burtness, a member of an Army Green Beret special forces unit, was on a patrol in the Mekong Delta of South Vietnam when he encountered the enemy booby trap.

Burtness was serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam during his four year Army career. He spent 1 1/2 years in Germany after his first tour then extended his enlistment twice and asked for reassignment to the war zone.

The soldier is survived by his mother, Mrs. Sylvia O'Neill, Seattle; his father, M. B. Burtness, Spokane; a sister, Patty, Seattle; a brother, Byron, Eugene, Ore.; and a grandmother, Mrs. Clara Merryfield, Spokane.

The body is being sent to Hennessey Funeral Home.
