Gayler L. Burtness, 80, Minot, formerly of Ryder, died Friday, October 20, 2006 in a Minot hospital.

Gayler was born February 12, 1926 in Ryder, ND, to Carl and Adda (Stiner) Burtness. He was raised in Ryder and graduated from Ryder High School in 1945. While growing up he helped his parents with the farming operation.

On November 9, 1950 he entered the United States Army and served in Europe. He was honorably discharged on November 4, 1952 and returned to Ryder where he farmed. In 1961 he moved with his mother to Minot. He worked for Boeing in Minot until his retirement.

Gayler was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion, L.C. Jensen Post #99, both in Ryder. He was a former member of the Eagles Aerie and the Elks Lodge. Gayler had a green thumb for flowers and had a beautiful garden. He was also a bird enthusiast and enjoyed bird watching.

Survivors: Sister-in-law, Geraldine Burtness Allen, Fargo; brother-in-law, George Officer, Minot; nieces and nephews, Glenn and Lynn Goltz, Carroll and Richard Burtness, Roselyn Saunders, Jarilyn Gess, Gaylen Allen, Michael and Rodney Officer; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Gayler was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Adda Burtness; brother, Karlyle Burtness; sisters, Crystal Goltz and Dorothy Officer.

Funeral: Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Visitation: Tuesday, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Burial: Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. at Rosehill Cemetery, Ryder, ND.
