John P. Bushfield

Miller – John P. Bushfield, 85, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Miller, died Dec. 2, 1999, in Mesa due to complications from an abdominal aneurysm.

John P. Bushfield was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Miller. His parents were South Dakota governor and U.S. Sen. Harlan J. Bushfield and U.S. Sen. Vera Sarah Cahalan Bushfield.

He graduated from the Miller school system in 1932, and from the University of South Dakota Law School in 1938. He practiced law in Miller for more than 50 years, until his retirement in the mid-1980s.

On July 14, 1939, he married Nancy May Peterson. She preceded him in death in September 1997.

He was a member of Miller country Club and Arizona Golf Resorts. He was a past Mason, past Kiwanian and a member of First Presbyterian Church, as well as a supporter of Boy Scout Troop 12 of Miller, the Pheasant Council and The Sioux council, Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan (Richard) Beckman of Burnsville, Minn.; a son, John d. of Miller; three grandsons and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Harlan J. of Miller and Sun City, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Janith Work.
