Rita Byrne Aitchison, Sept. 8, 1917 - May 10, 2008, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Lafayette, California, at the age of 90. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert Gordon Aitchison, her daughter Jane Fowler and son-in-law Rob Fowler of Walnut Creek, her son Robert Daniel Aitchison and his partner David Dolim of Los Angeles, and her grandchildren Bryan and Christopher Fowler.

A third-generation Californian, Rita was born in San Francisco and attended Girls' High School. During World War II she served as a member of the Navy's WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and received an honorary discharge at the rank of Yeoman Second Class.

Following her military service, Rita attended the University of California, Berkeley with her husband, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Following college, Rita worked as a secondary school teacher of history & home economics for the San Francisco Unified School District.

A talented & creative woman of many interests, Rita was a competitive figure skater, an accomplished seamstress, inspired cook, and achieved the rank of Silver Life Master in competitive contract bridge. She was devoted to her family and friends, and actively engaged in her church and community.

Friends and family were invited to a funeral mass on Saturday, June 21st, 2008, at Saint Perpetua Catholic Church, 3454 Hamlin Road, Lafayette, CA 94549. In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made in Rita's name to either A Friendly Place (a refuge for homeless and abused women located at 2298 San Pablo Ave, Oakland, CA 94612) or the Christian Children's Fund (P.O. Box 26507, Richmond, VA 23261).
