He was born at "Wintonbury Parish" in Windsor Township, which was later named Bloomfield. Son of Elizabeth Hubbard and Matthew Cadwell, he was the eleventh child in a family of seven boys and five girls. His father died when Abijah was four and his mother, when he was five years old.

He and his two year old brother, George, were taken in and raised by their oldest brother, Matthew Jr. and his wife, Joanna Marshall. Matthew and Joanna had a four year old son, also named Abijah (1771), who had died three days after Grandmother Elizabeth Hubbard Cadwell; thus some histories mistakenly include Abijah (1770) and George as children of their brother.

Abijah married (1) Eunice Allyn, 9 May 1793 at Wintonbury and she died there 31 March 1794, eleven days after the birth and death of their first child, a male, "Infant Babe" Cadwell.

He married (2) Elizabeth Barker, 20 March 1800 at Marlborough, Middlesex, Mass. She was born 5 February 1770 at Westborough, Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Jane Goddard and William Barker.

They settled at Adams County, Illinois.

Father of her four children: Almira (Elmira) - 1801, Curtis - 1803, Solomon - 1805, Eunice - 1807.

According to letters and Probate Records of 10 July, Abijah died about 10 June 1845, and was buried in a "large walnut coffin" sic. [fashioned by his sons] "most likely" in the Craigtown Churchyard, near the Cadwell farmstead. Later, his son, Curtis Cadwell would be buried in this cemetery.
