TEAMSTER CAPT DAVIDSON'S BRIG
REV WAR
1702 1806

Originally a slave owned by Deacon Drake and later freed by same by provision of Issac Drake's will. Caesar served as a teamster for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

Despite having been a former slave, in 1747 he was made a member, along with Nathaniel Drake (Caesar remained with the Drake family after his freedom), of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church and remained a much beloved member of the church for over 50 years.
He died in 1806 in the 104th year of his age. Because the church and community at large thought so highly of him, an
elaborate gravestone was provided. Part of the still readable inscription states:

"Here rest the remains of Caesar, an African, who died February 7, 1806 - Aged 104 years - He was for more than half a century a worthy member of the church in this Place and closed his life in confidence of a Christian. His numerous friends have erected this stone as a tribute of respect to his numerous virtues and piety."
