My Uncle Private James Cairns.
12th Battalion -The Royal Scots Lothian Battalion
Died of wounds.4 August 1915 age 25
The family history was that Uncle Jamesie was working in a trench, there were four soldiers in this section at the time. They heard a German wizz bomb overhead and Jamesie shouted for them to run, Two lads ran one way, my Uncle James and another lad ran the other way.
By a horrible twist of fate, James and the other soldier ran into the area of the falling bomb.

On checking the regimental records for the Royal Scots, I confirmed the family history was correct, sadly the record read "Quiet day" "day after day" until 4th Aug then it read "one dead -one wounded" The week after this the diary was the same, day after day it read "Quiet Day"
James joined the 12th of January 1915 and served with the expeditionary force he was awarded the 1914-15 star, The Victory and British medals.
In one of my Uncles last letters home on 29th June 1915, He talks about getting nothing to do but walking, being moved twice since his last letter home and of getting plenty of Rain and plenty of marching, He asks of family members and says " I think I will not be long now till I am back, We are all happy out here, plenty of everything, You can tell Mother not to worry as everything goes on all right " Alas James never made it back home.
James was a cooper to trade, My mother says that my Grand Mother was bereft with grief at the loss of her Brother and each remembrance Sunday, even years on, She could not be consoled or comforted, As a young lad I would visit my Grandmothers room where a large picture of James sat, Along with his bible and a pair of Army socks he owned, that were stained by his blood on that sad day in Aug 1915.
RIP James
