She was born on September 6, 1917 in Minot, ND, the daughter of Richard and Ella (Schoenauer) Callaghan. She graduated from St. Leo's Catholic School and attended Minot Business College. Vi worked as a secretary after attending college. In 1940, she married Lloyd Benson who worked for the Great Northern Railroad. In 1957, the family moved from a farm near Minot to Williston where Vi was employed as a secretary for St. Joseph's School and Church. She was also involved with the Parent Teachers Association, was a Brownie Leader and Den Mother.
In 1968, the family moved back to Minot and Vi became the office manager and personnel director of Ask, Inc. She was chosen Woman of the Year in 1979 by the American Business Women's Association. She was active in St. Winifred's guild of St. Leo's Confraternity, the Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Committee of the Air Force Association, American Business Women's Association and S.C.O.R.E. She was appointed to Minot Special Assessments Committee and volunteered at Norsk Hostfest for 14 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd who died in 1989; her parents; her sister, Dorothy Tallman; and brothers, Michael and Richard Callaghan.
