James was the son of Alexander J. Campbell and Alice Kimball Campbell. He was a graduate of Yale University at New Haven, Connecticut. He married first to Gertrude Seaver on 20 April 1926 at Berkeley, California. They had two children. He next married to Marjorie Bouton on 22 February 1938 at Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time of his second marriage, he was associated with his father's stock and bond business. He and Marjorie had two children. A 1930 Federal Census records his occupation as secretary to a stock broker. A 1940 Federal Census records his occupation as owner of a banana farm. James was a poultry rancher for forty years in Mokuleia, Hawaii. His wife wrote to a cousin, "We plan to carry on the ranch which Jim loved, and which holds so many happy memories for us all...He was really a wonderful person and the outpouring of affection and respect for him [...] is quite heartwarming."
