He grew up in and around Sophia, graduating from Sophia High School in 1952. After working for Dodge Main in Detroit for three years, Clyde came home to West Virginia, served in the U.S. Army, and worked for Westmoreland Coal Company for nineteen years before starting his own mine equipment repair company, Beckley Repair Service. He went on to operate CAMCO and Halfway Inc. Coal Companies.
In addition to his strong professional work ethic, he was a lifelong ardent golfer, scoring a hole-in-one at Twin Falls Resort State Park only three years after he suffered from a major stroke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnie and Vonley; siblings Archie, Vonley Junior, and Maxine; and niece Lois Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patsy Campbell (Basham); sons Clyde Randall Campbell and his wife Anita of Hurricane, and
Patrick Vonley and his wife Melinda of Elkview; beloved nieces Iris Greer and Brenda Williams; grandchildren Michael, Katelyn, Dale, and Molly Campbell, and countless other loved ones.
Graveside rites will be conducted at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley on Monday, December 28, 2015, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Don Kelly officiating. There will be no visitation.
