Toney Campbell died in one of the deadliest mine disasters in West Virginia history. On April 28, 1914 Eccles No. 5 mine exploded killing 174 miners. 9 miners died in Eccles No. 6 from the "Blackdamp" created from the explosion in the No. 5 mine. 183 total miners were lost that fateful day.
