After a successful bombing run, and while returning to base, it was noticed that B-29 #42-24687 was possibly hit by ground anti-aircraft fire as they were having trouble with 2 of their engines. They ended up ditching into the sea off the coast of Japan. The entire crew was lost in this ditching.
Barry was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple heart.
