Daniel Lewis "D.L." Carpenter, 80, devoted husband, father and grandfather, of Athens, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a former resident of Long Beach, Calif., for 35 years and a son of the late Albert Mossie and Lillie Smith Carpenter. He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel Lewis Carpenter Jr., and Ronald Allen Carpenter; granddaughter, Robin Lynn Carpenter; four sisters, Maude Jolley, Thelma Ervin, Mildred Hall and Edna Carpenter; and a brother, C.H. Carpenter.

He was a member of Tranquility United Methodist Church and attended Allen Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a retired employee of Mattel Toy Company.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred Evelyn Armstrong Carpenter of Athens; one grandson, Tony Carpenter of Athens; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Carpenter and Joseph Carpenter; two sisters, Eva Keith of Atlanta, Ga., and Alberta Parks of Garden Grove, Calif.; one brother, Kenneth Carpenter of Hemet, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ogle Wattenbarger officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at McMinn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Kendall Armstrong, Kenny Dickson, Ron Hennessee and Jimmy Ray.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
