The Reverend Dan Carpenter was a Methodist minister. He was born in South Carolina during the brief residence of his parents in that state. He was a son of the Reverend Timothy Carpenter and his wife, Hannah (Brown) Carpenter, natives of Attleborough, Massachusetts (spelled Attleboro since 1914). His father was an early circuit rider who helped to spread the Methodist faith on the frontier in early Tennessee and Kentucky. He was named Dan in honor of his paternal uncle, Dan Carpenter, of Camden, South Carolina, an early supporter of Methodism and a personal friend of Francis Asbury. While many assume Dan is always a nickname for Daniel, this is not the case. The Reverend Dan Carpenter was named Dan, not Daniel. Dan is a given name of Hebrew origin, found in the Bible. Dan was the fifth son of Jacob and founder of the Israelite Tribe of Dan.
